The Friday E-Mail - May Day Special

lanPerhaps one of the main challenges when writing a weekly e-mail such as this is the opening. There is a certain lack of inspiration at a computer desk or in a study. Four walls from which you have to draw their creativity to aid you in an original and fun opening. In the past I’ve gone for shock tactics, today, more thought and ponderment.

Why? Because I’m outside! It’s a blistering 21 degrees out here in the sun, and a beautifully refreshing wind blowing cooling and refreshing air against my face. Sitting at our all new garden furniture set, in the dapple shade of a cherry tree in full blossom, and pinky-white, I type and write this e-mail for you delectation. Few know of the beauty of my garden, because most visits have taken place during the night and the dark hours. Just wait until July 2nd, it’ll all change then!

This has to be dubbed the start of summer, and what a way to end a week! The weather has given us sun and warmth at the beginning, turning to dull, dreary and wet in the mid-week before erupting into this glorious offering from a clear blue sky, only the vapour trails of the aeroplanes erupting the blue hue from the atmosphere, caused kilometres above our heads. Lucky little ozone layer taking away the blue light from us!

For me at least, the weather has ran in parallel with my mood for the week, and although things have frayed at the edges just a little more, we seem to be all the better for it.

The weekend previous, with nothing to write about, may have seemed a little slow, but the Grand Prix de San Marino was a stunning race! An epic for the start of the European season, with wheel to wheel racing, overtaking and other spills throughout the 62 laps of constant entertainment. ITV got it in the neck for putting on a 2-minute advert break, covering the penultimate laps from the viewer’s eye, and provoking outcry from the TV audience. The result, was one which could well show an ominous prediction for the remainder of the season, but with two investigations from the stewards and then subsequent FIA appeals, the result of the race, and worse, the result from my Fantasy F1 Championship, were thrown into disarray for correction after the hearings on May 4th.

Oh, and there was some climbing trip somewhere as well on Sunday. They missed out though as they didn’t get to go to CUBE, like me and James did on Saturday, to see 100 chairs from 100 years of chair design. An eye-opening insight into the world of chairs, with pretty random, and some particularly elegant designs, all of which became more and more whacky as time progressed.

Onto the week’s events.

With less than four weeks left in school, this week was dubbed ‘Quest, cliché and sunning plan week’ with the sole aim of filling the week with quests, clichés and cunning plans, so cunning you could stick tails on them and call them weasels! It was a blinding success, and we only hope it continues into next week, which will be a week of days, including the fabled ‘magpie day’.

I ramble though, and I can only ramble further, so I don’t know what to mention, because I’d rather finish soon. So, very quickly: Lit and Deb – great success in my eyes, she handled it pretty well on the most part, and I got my Divine Comedy CD back! Thanks Rose! Chemi mock went off OK, but it could have been better. Managed to make a huge amount of colouring pencil jokes, at the expense of all my geography studying friends. But, perhaps most crucially, plans for the summer are beginning to come together, we just need to keep the momentum going, and not let them fizzle out. Come on, I need to arrange more things than just what’s been mentioned people! Like a few days in the mid-country with some guys I haven’t seen for a year. I just hope they’re up for it.

Hmm… This e-mails been about me on the most part, hasn’t it? Well, I apologise for that matter. There seems to be a decisively fewer amount of group activities at the moment. Free house anyone?

There, I’ll leave it at that. I wish you all a fun three day weekend, with the scam of May-day Bank Holiday working in our favour.

So, ta taa for now. See you all on Tuesday!

Paul

PS: I nearly forgot. With the exam season looming, I’m “fortunate” to only be facing mocks at the moment, with no real exams until mid June. For those doing languages, the time for mocks is nearly over as they face the joys of oral examinations. To those, I wish all the best of luck, if they believe in it that is, and offer them these sterling words of advice from my two orals a couple of years ago. Prepare well, don’t panic and most importantly, enjoy!

PPS: Why this is the May Day Special is quite beyond me, but what the hey. T'is the season and all!
